I assumed the position of Lay Leader for Ingomar on July 1, 2015, after being nominated by Pastor David Streets and elected to the position at the Charge Conference last year. Since then, I have received a number of questions from friends and members of the congregation, and it has occurred to me that there might be some value in describing exactly what the purpose of the position is, and what the Lay leader does.
The position is described in detail in section #251 of The Book of Discipline of the United Methodist Church. What it comes down to is the Lay Leader acts as the representative of the membership while working with the pastor to fulfill the mission and vision of the church. In order to be up to speed on current church business, the Lay Leader is a member of various committees including, Leadership, Finance, Staff Parish Relations, Stewardship, and Endowment. The Lay Leader also meets with the Pastor and executive team on a regular basis to discuss the state of the church and the opportunities for ministry.
I have been attending the above committee meetings for over a year now, and there is no question that in so doing I have become significantly more aware of the church infrastructure, strengths, weaknesses, direction, mission and vision. Nevertheless, I encourage every member of the congregation to feel free to discuss with me any thoughts that you might have regarding the church. I truly want to represent your ideas, hopes and dreams for our congregation.
We are now entering a new era having recently hired a new Assistant Pastor, Dennis Henley, and contracted with Trina Walker (Director of Strategic Implementation) with the objective of working with Pastor David Streets in leading our church into the future. We have the opportunity to bring Christ into the lives of more and more people through growing our contemporary services, our traditional services, our music program, our youth program, our small group program, and in new ways that may not even have been considered as yet.
Please prayerfully join with me in providing the input needed to help our pastors, staff and leadership move forward. If you have ideas, concerns, thoughts or even a simple message, please pass them along to me. You can do this simply by writing them in the comments section of the Connect Card that you receive every Sunday. If you prefer to go into more detail, or be more confidential you may contact me through my email: [email protected], call me at 412-580-6061, or simply talk to me after services on any Sunday.
