Confirmation is a structured year-long class for 8th graders to study and practice key tenets of our faith as disciples of Christ.  Confirmation at Ingomar Church is a unique journey, not just for the 8th grade confirmand but also for their parents, who come along for the journey as part of a companion confirmand parent’s class which meets weekly in the room next to the confirmands.  Throughout the year, the confirmands and their parents do mission projects together.  Confirmation year culminates at a weekend-long retreat for confirmands and parents, during which numerous activities are offered to bond child to parent, classmate to classmate, and confirmand to God.

Through the weekly classes each Sunday morning, we teach the kids that their baptism was God saying ‘YES’ to them; confirmation is their turn to say ‘YES’ to God. We talk about faith, the Bible and our beliefs, Methodist history, worship and its importance, and, of course, we entertain questions. At this age, the youth have a lot of questions regarding religion. They seek concrete proof. We have to explain that’s not faith. Hopefully, we show them what faith is by our example. We hope to plant the seeds and trust that others down the line will add water.— Tammy DeBonis (19-year veteran confirmation class leader)
